Mental Health Matters

Happy New Year!

To Do List

With the start of the new year, here are some helpful tips to get you started on the right foot from Marc Woods, D.N.P and Lindsey Jasinski, Ph. D, both from Eastern State Hospital at the University of Kentucky. Three things you can do for your mental health in the new year are limiting your screen time, exercise, and exploring the option of psychotherapy.

Limiting not work-related screen time to two hours per day has been proven to help sleep and reduce stress. Many phones now have screen timers that allow you to set specific apps on a time limit for the day.

Exercise is a highly mentioned topic in the new year, but did you know that it is proven to be good for your mental health too? It boosts our levels of endorphins and serotonin, which results in a better mood. This can be a nice neighborhood walk with a friend or a good gym session; as long as you're getting active.

Additionally, psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, can be very effective in enhancing one's skills on managing their stress and emotions. The start of a new year may feel daunting but remember that there is always a chance for a fresh start at any point.
